Education has always been my passion, so I am excited to tell you that today is an especially important day.

I can’t think of anything more important than investing in tomorrow’s leaders. We’ve talked so much in the past few years about the competitiveness of the U.S. auto industry. Collectively, returning the American auto industry to the position of technology and innovation leadership — not to mention bolstering our nation’s economic strength in the global economy — requires that we develop a diverse, talented workforce, empowering our brightest minds and ensuring that our best talent has the opportunity to achieve.

To support that goal, today the GM Foundation and Buick launched the $4.5 million-a-year Buick Achievers Scholarship program designed to inspire, celebrate, and enable human achievement. It’s one of the largest programs of its kind with awards of up to $25,000 for 100 qualifying students who demonstrate talent and community mindedness, but have financial need — and, an additional 1,000 students with $2,000. You should also note these scholarships are renewable for up to four years, and in the instance of longer-term engineering programs, five years. If you’re doing the math, that could add up to as much as $100,000 or more for one individual scholarship.

What’s more, at the board’s direction, the Foundation plans to award a new group of 100 students with up to $25,000 a year (again, up to four years) each year – - that means in four years’ time, the Foundation could be funding as much as $18 million to outstanding students.

So, what’s the catch? To be eligible, high school seniors or graduates applying for the Buick Achievers Scholarships need to be entering a four-year college or university for the entire 2011—12 academic year; plan to major in areas such as science, engineering, design and other technology related fields and have an interest in pursuing a career in the auto industry.

Through the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program, the GM Foundation will contribute to the development of the skilled, diverse and talented workforce the U.S. auto industry will need to innovate and lead in the decades to come. The latest weather squalls have me checking the forecast online regularly, as well as thanking my lucky stars I’m driving a Chevy 4×4 extended cab pickup to try to combat Michigan’s snowy and icy winter! But as we all know, sometimes even being prepared and cautious is not enough to ensure your safety!

Take Marc Keinath from Millington, Michigan. Marc was driving his 2004 Chevrolet Malibu along I-75 in Genesee County, Michigan, earlier this week when he encountered a patch of black ice and spun out. When he regained control of the car, a tractor trailer hauling 20 tons of sugar smashed into the rear of his Malibu before falling on top of it!

Luckily, Marc kept his cool – and even as parts of the roof of the Malibu began to yield under the tremendous weight of the trailer, he opted to recline his seat to give him more room inside, reach for his cell phone and dial 911. Wow – that’s calm, I’d say!

Firefighters and first responders quickly arrived and helped extract him from the dangerous situation. And, fortunately although bruised and shaken, Marc walked away with no serious injuries. Marc credits God for giving him a second chance at life, the firefighters and first responders who helped him – and Chevy for making a car that held a semi!

When we at Chevy heard Marc’s story, we were grateful to hear that he was okay. But we also wanted to help out – so today we are replacing his 2004 Malibu with a new 2011 Malibu. He’s receiving the car at the Flint Engine Operations plant this afternoon – and as an added bonus, Marc will even get to meet some of the Detroit Tigers, who just happened to be scheduled to visit the plant today!

Not every crash ends this miraculously, and we suggest that you not try putting a semi on your Malibu at home! But we do take a great deal of pride in the fact that Marc’s Malibu held up that semi, and we’re really glad he’s okay. (His new Malibu is a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in 2010 and 2011, and comes with two years OnStar technology standard, so we think it will meet his safety expectations!) While stories like this are scary, they make us feel good about the products we build and the people we build them for. Thanks, Marc – and enjoy your new car!

Following a three-year hiatus, Cadillac is heading back to the racetrack. Cadillac announced today that it will field two teams in the Sports Car Club of America World Challenge.

The car? The CTS-V Coupe.

“Returning to racing in the SCCA World Challenge is a great way to demonstrate the performance and capability of the CTS-V Coupe,” said Don Butler, vice president for Cadillac marketing. “The racecars in this series are production based, which allows us to validate our performance against the best of our competitors on the track, and not just the showroom.”

Cadillac’s return to racing is a team effort. Drivers Andy Pilgrim and Johnny O’Connell have already been brought aboard and Cadillac will work with Pratt & Miller, a Michigan based engineering firm, to develop the CTS-V Coup racecar.

The first event in the SCCA World Challenge is March 25-27 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The best Cadillac ever? The folks over at AutoWeek certainly think so.

The magazine named the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe the “Best of the Best” of the new class of new or significantly redesigned cars. The news was announced today and will appear in AutoWeek’s Jan. 11 issue.

AutoWeek’s editors praised the CTS-V Coupe’s combination of refinement and performance. One editor said, simply, “It’s quite something to behold.”

“The AutoWeek Best of the Best award affirms what we thought at Cadillac when we launched the CTS-V Coupe,” said Don Butler, vice president for Cadillac marketing. “The CTS-V Coupe represents the pinnacle of Cadillac design and performance. "Andrew Berfelo has quite a legacy on his hands. As the owner of CR Autos, an automotive parts repository specializing in vintage Cadillacs, he is in charge of continuing a cycle of madness started by his brother Randy. Randy Berfelo left the planet too soon, losing his life at just 32 years old, yet this was more than enough time for him to build up a most impressive collection of hundreds of Cadillacs, one that his brother is now looking to sell.

CR Autos, located in Hay Lakes, Alberta, Canada, opened its doors in 1983, when Randy Berfelo realized he could turn a hobby into a real source of income. When you need parts for a restoration, it’s sometimes cheaper to find a parts car than to buy the exact pieces you’re looking for, so Randy brought home two of them. Two quickly turned into 10, and a restoration project turned into a new business.

“My brother started a restoration on a Cadillac convertible, in the ‘70’s. He needed parts so he bought a few cars to help with the restoration,” said Andrew Berfelo. “He kept buying parts cars and people kept buying parts from him.”

Inventory began expanding at a prodigious pace. Service bays and garages gave way to warehouses until Randy ultimately acquired a large plot of farmland. His dream was to put 500 Cadillacs on that grassy hillside. Unfortunately, that dream was cut short when Randy died in 1989.

It was up to Andrew to see his legacy live on, and he did just that. The older of the Berfelo brothers, Andrew didn’t make it to 500 but he did manage to bring the total as high as 365 cars, ranging in model year from 1947 up through 1979.

When asked if he has a favorite model out of all the Cadillacs out there, he responds, “I don’t own any more of them but it would have to be the ’59 convertible. It’s the one that everyone wants to restore and the parts moved the fastest for that one.”

If you own an older Cadillac, chances are good that CR Autos has any part you need, even if that part is no longer made. Berfelo even bought up stockpiles of parts GM had discontinued. Because of this, Cadillac owners from all over the globe have turned to Berfelo and his Canadian Cadillac Ranch for support.

But Berfelo is now getting on in age and looking to retire. He is 65 and wants to spend less time staring at a sea of Cadillacs and more time with his family. The problem here is that you can’t simply walk away from a 20-year obsession. So Berfelo needs some help getting his yard cleared off and he is ready to unload the entire lot. He was able to cull the total Cadillac count down by 30 cars after crushing the undesirable 1973 to 1976 models. That leaves 335 cars, which he wants off his property in one year.

“I carried on my brother’s dream but I’m 65 years old and I can’t live someone else’s dream my whole life,” he said.

It’s not just cars for sale, as Berfelo has amassed a few shipping containers worth of miscellaneous parts. What would it take to buy the whole lot?

“I would sell it for $100,000. That’s 10 cents on the dollar,” he said.

It certainly seems a small price to pay for such a collection of vehicles and parts, however the logistics of moving the entire lot seem tough. It might be easier to simply buy the land as well, but Berfelo has not listed that for sale.

“But if someone comes in with a big wheelbarrow full of money, well, I’m not married to anything,” he said. “Money talks.”"

The definition of Vin Etch courtesy of wikipedia - VIN etching is a countermeasure to motor vehicle theft. It most commonly involves the use of a stencil and glass etching paste to etch a vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) onto the windshield and windows. Thieves would need to replace the glass before selling the stolen vehicle, thus reducing or eliminating their profit.[1] VIN etching can increase the odds of recovery of car by police.[2]

At Scranton Motors, We Vin Etch ALL of our vehicles. Not only is it a theft deterrent, it also can save some customers money depending on their insurance carrier. Whether you live in a rural or urban community, a safety feature and theft deterrent is never a bad thing.

With all the talk of Bankruptcy, Banks floundering, Credit card debt...let's talk about how a family owned dealership survived what some are calling a recession...a fiasco...and have resurrected the name, the franchises and the direction of the automotive industry with hard work, dedication and loyalty to the customers and what it means to serve your community.

Its always been the same theory here at Scranton Motors: Customer satisfaction. What can we offer to customers that not every other dealership can. Customer satisfaction. Let's face it....the vehicles we have here can be found in other places as well. With the way technology is, the average consumer can now pick out a vehicle, see every detail of that particular vehicle, get the most aggressive price even before entering a dealership.

But what will not EVER change in this business, is the feeling of being properly served and treated by the dealership you choose. Far too often, we hear horror stories of bad experiences that people have had to now only make them defensive to future delaership experiences.

What we try to express everyday to our customers is the simple idea of treating our customers how we would like to be treated. In place for our new vehicle customers is a survey after the purchase which goes through several channels and rates all of our departments from Sales to service to finance. It gives the customer a chance to let all parties involved know how there experience was.

Here, on a more personal note, we have designed a family friendly atmosphere for customers to feel welcome and at home; to feel like a person and not a number. You can find Mr. Scranton at the dealership on a daily basis talking to customers whether it be service or sales; our sales managers don't feel the need to sit behind computer screens and offices; rather shake your hand and understand where your coming from. Our sales consultants are down to earth with the idea to listen to customers needs and wants first.

Scranton Motors has weathered the storm. We are now a three franchise dealership: Buick, GMC and Cadillac. We also have a new program in place for customers who have weathered the economic rollercoaster but had some troubles along the way. Review : Buick’s expansive Enclave

If there’s one thing GM has been unusually good at, it’s building big, solid vehicles that combine comfort with excellent utility. This has been especially true for their line of big SUVs, and since they’ve decided to retire their minivan platform (for the time-being , anyway), this role has been superseded by their big new crossover SUVs, including Chevy, GMC and Buick versions of the same platform. We’re going to spend some quality time this week with the Buick Enclave, which is arguably the most luxurious of the bunch, and a very impressive family-hauler .

Click the thumbnails above to see the full size pictures.The Enclave is available with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive in two trim levels (CX, and CXL). All variants are powered by a 3.6-liter V6, and the smooth-idling mill develops 288 horsepower and channels said muscle to all four wheels in our AWD tester through a six-speed automatic transmission, the lone gearbox available. The drivetrain suits the vehicle well, and power is sufficient to push the 5,000-pound vehicle to 60 mph in around 9 seconds. Shifts are crisp, with good ratios – the only foible being a slight reluctance to downshift when passing until you really get on the gas. Handling is quite secure, and the big beast is actually pretty nimble in traffic, with a very compliant ride and an impressively solid feel on rough roads. With the optional ($455) towing package, the Enclave can pull a 4,500-pound trailer. The ABS brakes are sufficiently powerful, with acceptable stopping distances and good control. StabiliTrak, which is GM’s stability and traction control software, is standard, as is OnStar, with turn-by-turn navigation and automatic crash response.

Climb into the Enclave and you will experience room that nearly rivals a minivan (yet you still have conventional rear doors). The driver’s perch is a bit on the flat side, but quite commodious, and controls are a mixed bag of logical and atypical switch locations. By contrast , the analog instrumentation is very clear and concise. The real beauty of the Enclave is revealed when you haul the rest of your crew, for both the second and third rows are very expansive and well-furnished . The second row on our CXL had two bucket seats, with aisle access to the split bench third row. This rearward seating is roomy enough for two adults, and while the floor is a little high, it’s perfectly suitable for most individuals. With the third row folded, you have 67 cubic feet of cargo space, and with the second row folded as well, this expands to a whopping 115 cubic feet. All through the cabin , workmanship is excellent and the feeling is one of security and quality, with impressive attention to detail.

The Buick Enclave is a large crossover SUV that is as well-built as it is roomy, and is as pleasant to drive as it is to ride in. The 2010 Buick Enclave CXL-2 AWD is EPA-rated 16 MPG city/22 highway and has a base price of $43,995. With options including a navigation system , our MSRP came to $50,605. www. buick.com

Woman gives birth driving Chevrolet Cobalt, gets year's supply of diapers from GM

General MotorsChevrolet CobaltGeneral Motors is awarding a Minnesota couple a year's supply of diapers and other supplies after it was reported that a new mother gave birth behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Cobalt.

Amanda McBride was in labor when she was en route to the hospital. The baby's father, Joseph Phillips, has a medical condition that kept him from driving, but he was able to help steer from the passenger seat.

McBride gave birth to 8-pound baby boy, also named Joseph. In addition to the diapers, GM is giving the couple a stroller, formula, toys and other baby items.

"We knew the Cobalt was designed to deliver its occupants safely, but never did we expect a delivery quite like this,” Margaret Brooks, Chevrolet product marketing director, Small Cars and Crossovers, said in a statement.

“From everyone at Chevrolet, we’d like to congratulate Amanda and Joseph on the newest addition to their family. Unfortunately, there is no section in the Cobalt driver’s manual on ‘How to Change a Diaper,’ but we’re sure they’ll do just fine.”

Interestingly enough, as one new life begins, another ends. This is the last model year for the Cobalt, which will be replaced by the Cruze in 2011.

Sierra HD delivers 21,700 pounds towing and 6,635 pounds payload

DETROIT GMC announced today that the new 2011 GMC Sierra heavy-duty

pickups have increased towing and payload ratings through ongoing

development and testing, making them the most capable and powerful

heavy-duty pickups in the segment. The ratings have been increased to

21,700 pounds of towing and 6,635 pounds of payload.

When developing the Sierra HD our focus has consistently been to deliver

customers the most capable heavy-duty trucks in the market, along with

premium features and styling that distinguish GMC amongst the

competition, said Rick Spina, GM Full-size Truck global vehicle line

executive. Our first set of capability tests confirmed that the team had

exceeded the payload and towing targets by a significant margin. Ongoing

testing demonstrated a clear opportunity to increase the true capabilities

of these trucks.

The GMC Sierra HD engineering team was able to achieve the increase in

towing capacity to 21,700 by putting the Sierra HD through a wide variety

of tests over various terrains, grades and weather conditions. Extensive

design and lab analysis, climatic wind tunnel testing, and actual on-road

extreme ride and handling testing methods were all used to confirm stable

handling and performance of the powertrain, drivetrain and brake

components at maximum gross combined weight rating (GCWR). The GCWR is

increased to 29,200 pounds.

To achieve the increased payload capacity, engineers used higher strength

steel for the cargo box sills. The team conducted a significant amount of

testing where maximum payloads tested the stronger cargo box and rear axle

components. The maximum payload rating has been increased to 6,635 pounds.

We encourage consumers to test drive the Sierra HD against the

competition, said Spina. Based on our test results, we are confident our

HDs will prove to be the best choice for real-world towing and hauling

needs.
For the first time ever, GMC will be offering the exclusive Denali line in

our heavy-duty pickups with the Sierra Denali 2500 and 3500 HDs. The

Denali version is distinguished by its iconic four-bar, chrome grille with

round air inlets, along with body-color bumpers, chrome door handles,

chrome accents and and 17- (Dually), 18- and 20-inch polished forged

aluminum wheels.

The GMC Sierra HD is the segment leader in diesel horsepower and torque

(397hp, 765

lb-ft), conventional towing (17,000 lbs.), 5th-wheel towing (21,700 lbs.),

payload (6,635 lbs.) and maximum GCWR (29,100 lbs.). Production for the

Sierra HD begins next week at Flint Assembly in Flint, MI and customers

can expect to start seeing the heavy-duty trucks on dealer lots shortly

thereafter.
