Technology that is so innovative it literally grabs the steering wheel and takes over is already available on some vehicles, but it’s not necessarily what consumers want.

Half of drivers in a recent survey said they would consider paying extra for features that detect and warn them of vehicles in their blind spots.

But the survey also found that drivers are squeamish about giving control of their vehicles to a computer. Most prefer the blind-spot detection system to provide a noise warning, a steering-wheel vibration, or some other alert system, to let the driver take the necessary evasive action, according to the survey by Harris Interactive, a consumer research firm in Rochester, N.Y.

Harris researchers found similar preferences for lane-departure warning technology. It might be fine to electronically alert drivers that they’ve drifted into another lane, but drivers prefer to return to the proper lane themselves.

“Anything that’s intrusive or takes away from the driver’s experience is something that consumers are going to be nervous about,” says Thilo Koslowski, an automotive practice leader for Gartner, a tech research firm in Stamford, Conn.

Go to the “slide show” link below to see a ranking of the 10 high-tech features consumers want most.

Through its AutoTechcast study that ranks more than 60 advanced automotive features based on consumer preference, Harris experts found that drivers often consider safety technology a must-have, even if it means paying more.

But the research also suggests that consumers are most attracted to features that enhance their own safety rather than that of others.

Pedestrian-sensing systems aren’t well received, says Stephen Lovett, director of automotive and transportation research in Harris’ Ann Arbor, Mich., office. “The safety features that perform well are those that protect the driver and the occupants in the vehicle. But when it comes to protecting people outside the vehicle, the interest wanes.” More from ForbesAutos.com

Pedestrian-sensing ranked near the bottom of Harris’ list of desirable tech features, along with cup-holders that heat and cool beverages, panoramic sunroofs, rear-seat entertainment, and satellite video.

Many of these features don’t directly impact driving, so they aren’t a priority for most people, Lovett says.

“In general, things like cooled cup-holders are nice to have, but someone wouldn’t choose or not choose a vehicle because of it,” he says.

Gartner’s Koslowski says any new feature — safety or otherwise — should make driving easier, more enjoyable, or safer. That means next-generation features like onboard Internet access and email, or futuristic concept cars that drive themselves, might be tough sells, at least in the short term.

“Replicating the personal computer experience inside the car is ill-advised in my opinion,” Koslowski says.

But new features that save people time and money do tend to be well received.

The feature drivers most want on their vehicles is rollover detection with advanced side-curtain airbags, according to the Harris survey. These airbags deploy preemptively and stay inflated longer than other airbags to help protect occupants in the event of a rollover. Because SUVs are more prone to rollovers, many of them already offer such systems as standard or optional equipment.

Will You Miss Hummer?
Share Your Story With ABC News
Feb. 25, 2010

The economy is supposed to be in the throes of recovery, but that hasn't saved some popular brands from biting the dust. General Motors said this week it would begin to wind down its Hummer business after the company failed to complete a deal with a Chinese company that had planned to buy the division.

New GM 2010 Hummers H3 are seen at the Team Chevrolet Hummer dealership in Pasadena, Calif., on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010. General Motors today announced that Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co., Ltd. (Tengzhong) was unable to complete the acquisition of HUMMER. As a result, GM will begin the orderly wind-down of the HUMMER operations.
Hummer is one of several brands GM has scuttled as the embattled auto company works to restructure itself into a leaner, more profitable firm and pay back the billions of dollars it received in government aid. GM last year bid goodbye to its Saturn and Pontiac brands.

GM investing $500 million in next-gen Ecotec engines

Building cars is expensive, and many of the priciest bits of technology driving research and development costs are wrapped up in the powertrain. Therefore it's not particularly surprising to hear that General Motors has just announced a $494 million investment to build the next generation of Ecotec engines.

The biggest chunk by far – to the tune of $425 million, to be exact, bringing along with it 470 new jobs – will go towards GM's Tonawanda, N.Y., engine plant, which is where the aforementioned Ecotec engines will be manufactured. The rest of it will be divided up between GM's plants in Defiance, Ohio ($59 million) and Bay City, Michigan ($10.5 million).

GM hasn't yet announced what new forms the Ecotec will take. At present, the four-cylinder powerplant is available in 2.0-, 2.2- and 2.4-liter sizes and comes standard in a wide range of products from The General, including the new Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain in its 2.4-liter guise and fitted with direct injection and variable valve timing. Feel free to click on past the break for the complete press release.

GM Total Sales Increase 14 Percent Fourth Consecutive Month of Retail Sales Gains for GM's Four Brands

DETROIT, Feb. 2 -- U.S. dealers for GM's brands - Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac - reported retail sales of 102,420, up 3 percent compared to January 2009, and 145,098 total sales (up 30 percent). These results were driven by the continued strong growth of new GM crossovers and passenger cars. For the month, GM dealers reported 146,825 total sales (including other brands), representing a total sales increase of 14 percent from the previous year.
"This is the fourth month in a row that Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac have shown a collective year-over-year retail sales increase," said Susan Docherty, GM vice president, Sales, Service and Marketing. "Our long-term plan to continue to focus and strengthen our brands is delivering results."

General Motors Announces B20 Biofuel Capability for New, 2011 Duramax 6.6l Turbo Diesel

GRAPEVINE, TX - February 8, 2010: GM announced today that its new lineup of heavy-duty diesel pickups will have B20 biodiesel capability. B20 fuel is a blend of 20-percent biodiesel and 80-percent conventional diesel, which helps lower carbon dioxide emissions and lessens dependence on petroleum. The announcement was made at the National Biodiesel Conference.

GM's new Duramax 6.6L turbo diesel engine has been substantially revised to include B20 capability, as well as meet strict new emissions standards effective this year. The new Duramax will power the redesigned 2011 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra heavy-duty pickups, as well as the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size vans. Chevrolet will unveil the 2011 Silverado heavy-duty trucks at the Chicago Auto Show on Feb. 10.

"B20 capability in our new heavy-duty trucks is the latest addition to a growing number of alternate fuel options offered by General Motors," said Mike Robinson, vice president, Environment, Energy and Safety Policy. "We are seeking different paths to fuel solutions in order to maximize efficiency, reduce emissions and minimize the dependence on petroleum."

GM already leads in the marketing of FlexFuel vehicles capable of running on E85 ethanol with more than 4 million vehicles on the road today. Like ethanol, biodiesel is a domestically produced, renewable fuel made primarily of plant matter - mostly soybean oil. In pure form, biodiesel lowers carbon dioxide emissions.

"The 2007 federal energy bill mandates increased biodiesel production and more states and municipalities are requiring it," said Robinson. "Biodiesel production is growing and GM is excited and ready to satisfy demand with our new B20 capable Duramax 6.6L engine."

Estimates by National Biodiesel Board indicate about 700 million gallons of the fuel were produced in 2008 - up from about 500,000 gallons in 1999. Market fluctuations caused production to decrease in 2009, but it is expected to rise with more mandates and the availability of approved vehicles, such as the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra heavy-duty trucks.

Hybrid Powertrain Systems Engineering Director

GM Electric Motor Development Manager Paul Turnbull checks the status of an electric drive test at the GM Powertrain Engineering Development Center .
Today we announced a $246 million investment and to me it’s more than just another big dollar figure from an automotive company. It’s an investment in people, jobs, knowledge and our future.

The $246 million investment will fund GM’s expansion of in-house electric vehicle development capabilities and make us the first major U.S. automaker to design and manufacture electric motors, which is a core technology for hybrids and electric vehicles.

This investment also allows us to add more jobs and continue expanding electric motor research and development, design and validation capabilities already under way at facilities in Michigan, Indiana and California. As part of a U.S. Department of Energy $105 million grant awarded in August 2009, our White Marsh, Maryland transmission plant alone will create about 200 new jobs.

It’s an investment in our company’s future. This gives us the opportunity to take our expertise in several technologies, like transmissions and controls, and add electric motor technology for an efficient electric drive system. We can’t achieve this by simply purchasing the parts from a supplier; we need to really understand them. The best way to understand and know we have the best is by controlling the design, the manufacturability, the material selection, and the production processes. Now our relationship with suppliers will be more collaborative and allow for faster innovation than ever before.

What does this mean to our customers? These electric motors are engines for hybrid and electric vehicles. They provide power to the wheels. By designing and manufacturing electric motors in-house, we can more efficiently use energy from batteries as they evolve, potentially reducing cost and weight – two significant challenges facing batteries today. The new electric motors will be smaller, more powerful and more energy efficient. Their smaller size will allow us to use them in a variety of vehicles. The first GM electric motors will debut in 2013 in our rear-wheel-drive full-hybrid vehicles.

Did you know that electric motor innovation supported the first wave of automotive growth a century ago with the electric starter? It eliminated the need for a hand crank and revolutionized automotive travel for the customer. We think the electrification of today’s automobiles will be just as revolutionary and just as beneficial to our customers. Makes you wonder where this innovation could take us – keep watching and see.

First ‘Panther Plunge’ helps fuel bank
BY BILL BESWICK ReminderNews
Would you go swimming on the 23rd of January, in a reservoir in northern Connecticut ? Several East Windsor residents did, and it was all for a very good cause – to raise money for the East Windsor Fuel Bank. The inaugural “Freezin’ for a Reason Panther Plunge” was sponsored by the East Windsor Parks and Recreation Department, and the brief but bitterly cold swim was held at the park on Reservoir Road. Under sunny skies, with the temperatures hovering around the freezing mark, a large group of brave citizens plunged into the bitter cold water of the park on a Saturday afternoon .
Once out of the water, the participants gathered around a wood fire to take the chill off, followed by a warming party at the Broad Brook School. There, the Panther Plungers enjoyed hot chocolate, coffee and refreshments, which were all made available by the East Windsor High School Booster Club and East Windsor PTO.
Although a final figure was not available at press time last week, Melissa Maltese, the East Windsor Parks and Recreation Department director and organizer of the event, estimated that more than $2,500 was raised and will be turned over to the East Windsor Fuel Bank.
