2011 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon crosses over to pure performance

The next addition to Cadillac's athletic V-Series is breaking cover at the New York auto show with the reveal of the CTS-V Sport Wagon. Packing 556 hp from a supercharged 6.2-liter V8, the CTS-V Sport Wagon launches late this year.

Cadillac will use the bright lights of New York to debut a special version of the wagon, which it's calling a show car. It's not intended for production, but some of its outfittings could be used for future trim packages. The show car gets a unique rear fascia and upper spoiler.

The CTS-V Sport Wagon rounds out the CTS line, which has become almost a subbrand for Cadillac. It joins the landmark sedan, which was key to the brand's rebirth through design and performance, and the coupe which launches this summer. All versions now have V editions. Cadillac is trying to position its performance line in the same manner as BMW's vaunted M models.

"This is about establishing the V-Series as an important subbrand," Cadillac spokesman David Caldwell said.

Performance and pricing

The CTS-V Sport Wagon offers six-speed automatic and manual transmissions and pushes out 551 lb-ft of torque from the 376-cubic-inch engine with a cast aluminum block and roto-cast cylinder heads. Look for a 0-to-60-mph time of less than four seconds, which is in line with the rest of its V siblings. Despite the stretched demeanor, the wagon loads on only about 200 pounds over the sedan. The V6 wagons and sedans share about 85 percent common parts, Caldwell said.

The chassis is bolstered with magnetic ride control that has tour and sport settings, Brembo brakes and 19-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin PS2 tires. The rear-wheel-drive wagon will have power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering and a limited-slip differential. The car is expected to get 14 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway.

The performance wagon will start at about $61,000, and many will go for about $65,000 when loaded with options.

10 Tips to Improve Your Gas Mileage

How often do you have to stop and fill up your tank? Frequent trips to the gas station may be a sign that you’re not maximizing your car’s fuel efficiency. As it turns out, trading your ride in for a hybrid isn’t the only way to improve your gas mileage. Here are some simple pointers to get started.

Lighten your load. Take out your golf clubs, toolbox and other heavy items when you don’t need them. Any extra weight reduces your car’s fuel efficiency.
Use cruise control as much as possible because driving at a constant speed increases your gas mileage. Plus, it sure makes that daily commute a little more bearable.
Switch into overdrive to decrease the engine’s speed and save gas.
Keep the idling to a minimum. Instead, turn off the engine while you’re waiting for your pals to pick up something from the store or finish getting ready.
Gradually accelerate to waste less gas.
Maintain your tire pressure to ensure that your tires are always properly inflated. In addition to better gas mileage, it will help your tires last longer.

Use the grade of motor oil recommended by your car’s manufacturer, whether it be 5W-30, 5W-20 or 10W-30.

Give your engine a tune up on a regular basis.
Only turn on the air conditioning when you’re dripping sweat and threatened by heat stroke. Okay, maybe that’s a bit extreme, but you get the idea. Use it sparingly.
Take off bike or luggage racks when you aren’t using them. They interfere with the aerodynamics of your vehicle and cause drag, which causes your car to expend more energy than necessary.

GM to reinstate more than 580 rejected dealerships, sources say

Chrissie Thompson
Automotive News -- March 5, 2010 - 10:28 am ET

DETROIT -- General Motors Co. is preparing to reinstate a majority of rejected dealerships that applied for arbitration, four sources familiar with the matter said.

That means GM will restore more than 580 of the 1,160 dealerships that have filed for arbitration to get their franchises back.

GM plans to send letters to dealers as soon as next week that say the automaker intends to restore their franchises outside of arbitration, the sources said. GM has mostly finished the process of selecting dealerships to reinstate outside of arbitration, one of the sources said.

The remaining dealerships, which GM intends to wind down before November, will not receive letters. GM will attempt to settle or arbitrate with them, the sources said.

GM North America President Mark Reuss and U.S. marketing chief Susan Docherty "will give an update on the dealer arbitration process" in a conference call today at 3 p.m. EST, the automaker said in a statement.

The executives will hold a webcast with dealers at 2 p.m., two dealers said.

GM declined to comment on the reinstatement process.

Meanwhile, on Monday, GM started sending dealers a separate letter that offered the start of settlement talks that could result in reinstatement. Those letters required dealers to agree to a variety of conditions, including keeping some documents confidential.

The plans show the next step in GM's attempt to make peace with dealers, many of whom were alienated when GM decided to cut 1,350 stores last year in advance of its U.S. bankruptcy. About 1,160 of them have filed for arbitration to contest that decision, according to the process outlined in the federal law that gives the dealers that right.

The restored stores will regain all of their dealership privileges immediately, including the ability to order new product, one of the sources said.

Mark Reuss, president of GM North America, had said GM planned to contact dealers to discuss settling outside of arbitration.

Reuss has said that good dealer relations are among his top priorities this year. He gained direct responsibility for U.S. sales in a management shakeup announced Tuesday.
